The Helmsley Archive

The Helmsley Archive holds over 9400 images and has published 3880 on its website showing 150 years of local history through the lens.

Water from the Moors

HAHS has conducted projects that include geophysical surveys and investigations into water-related features on the moors.

Scawton Dew Pond

The restoration preserved a historic feature of the landscape while creating a habitat for local wildlife. The pond dates back at least 150 years.

Geophysics at Mowthorpe

The survey focused on an area where aerial photographs had revealed archaeological features, including burials and a prehistoric dike.

Boltby Scar

The project focuses on the archaeology of the Boltby Scar promontory fort, a significant site in the North York Moors.

Abbots Hag

The project site is situated in Abbot Hag Wood, which is also part of the scenic Cleveland Way long-distance footpath.

The Helmsley Archive

The Helmsley Archive holds over 9400 images and has published 3880 on its website showing 150 years of local history through the lens.

Jen Harris (former HAHS chair) and Paul Harris established The Helmsley Archive using images from the John Collier collection, gifted to Helmsley Town Council.  They added many more images scanned from those kept by people with connections to Helmsley and the local area.
