Visit to the fantastic Beadlam Roman Villa

This past August, the Helmsley Archaeological and Historical Society (HAHS) arranged an exclusive visit to the remarkable Beadlam Roman Villa.

David Driver

HAHS Guided Tour of Beadlam Roman Villa

An enthusiastic group of 20 HAHS members were treated to an insightful tour led by David Driver, a knowledgeable guide from English Heritage.

Under his expert guidance, the group explored the substantial footprint of the villa, delving into both its architectural history and the fascinating story of the archaeological excavations that have taken place there over the years. David brought the stone foundations to life, explaining how the settlement evolved and what daily life might have been like for its affluent inhabitants during the late Roman period.

What makes Beadlam particularly special is its distinction as what is believed to be the most northerly civilian Roman villa discovered in the country. Its existence speaks volumes about the extent of Roman influence and a settled, agricultural way of life far from the military frontiers. The tour provided a wonderful opportunity for members to connect with this unique and nationally significant historical treasure, reminding us all of the rich tapestry of history that lies right on our doorstep. The visit was both an educational success and a delightful social outing for the society.
